Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
