Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
